Dividend-paying stocks took a backseat to this year's tech-driven market rally, but 2024 could be the year that they come back in vogue. A couple of catalysts could swing the pendulum back in favor of dividend payers in 2024, including the Fed's forecast for three rate cuts in the new year. "Not only do you get the dividend yield and dividend growth, but you get some capital appreciation perhaps – that's where it gets interesting," he added. Special dividend payers Kim Abmeyer, certified financial planner and founder of Abmeyer Wealth Management in Dallas, sees dividend-paying stocks coming into focus for 2024. The energy company in November announced that it raised its regular dividend by 10% and it declared a $1.50 per share special dividend.

Broadcom shares jumped 9% Monday after Citigroup resumed its coverage of the stock with a buy rating and updated its price target to $1,100. Broadcom bought VMware in November to bolster its cloud technology infrastructure that it sells to other businesses. Citigroup's bullishness is largely because it believes Broadcom is well-positioned to earn money from the AI boom. "We expect sales from AI infrastructure to double from $4 billion in F23 (11% of F23 sales) to over $8 billion in F24 (17% in F24 sales)," the analysts wrote. Broadcom reported solid earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter last Thursday, which gave its shares a 2.4% boost to $944.30 at Friday's market close.

In today's big story, we're looking at the rising similarities between Target and Walmart. Dominick Reuter/Business InsiderIf imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Walmart and Target are embarking on some serious tributes to each other. And Walmart founder Sam Walton openly admitted he stole borrowed plenty of ideas from Sol Price, the originator of the wholesale club model. That's led Walmart to see an increase in higher-income clientele, a trend they're leaning into.

On Tuesday, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan addressed questions from VMware employees in an all-hands meeting. Some employees asked about company culture perks such as employee-resource groups and company-wide parties – both of which Tan said Broadcom doesn't do, according to a recording of the meeting viewed by Business Insider. Tan added that Broadcom doesn't have those groups although it doesn't mean the company shouldn't and that it could learn from them. He said Broadcom doesn't do celebrations on a company-wide basis, but each division can choose to have celebratory or team-building events if they want. Broadcom laid off VMware employees on Monday.

Hock Tan, the CEO of Broadcom, said in an all-hands meeting Tuesday that he expects employees living within 50 miles of an office to return to in-person work. One submitted question was: "What can you tell me about headquarters, office locations, and remote work?" "Any other exception, you better learn how to walk on water if you want to work remote," Tan said at the meeting. Broadcom laid off some VMware employees earlier this week, BI first reported. Before the acquisition closing, Tan was already telling VMware employees that he expected them to return to the office.

Tan had a lot more at stake—a $69 billion deal he was waiting on China to approve. For months, Chinese regulators wouldn’t clear the U.S. chipmaker’s bid to buy enterprise software developer VMware, leading Broadcom to put off its date for completion of the deal—first announced in May 2022—three times. Intel’s planned acquisition of Israeli firm Tower Semiconductor , for more than $5 billion, was scuttled in August after Chinese regulators failed to approve it.
